ELEMENTARY ENGAGEMENT GUIDE

FRIDAY, JULY 31, 2020

WORD OF THE DAY:

Sportsmanship: (noun) is an attitude of fairness, respect for opponents, and graciousness in winning or losing.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

It is your response to winning and losing that makes you a winner or a loser.

-HARRY SHEEHY
HEALTHY SNACK:

Frozen Yogurt Bites

Fill mini muffin tins fitted with liners with vanilla yogurt and fresh berries (or banana slices). Freeze until firm, pop into a resealable plastic bag and nestle into a larger bag of ice to transport in a cooler to the game.

CAREER OF THE DAY:

For many, sports careers are the stuff of dreams, with countless kids and adults alike aspiring to a career as a professional athlete. Though the physical demands of professional athleticism are intense, so too are the rewards, with players in many disciplines averaging extremely high salaries.

Which sports leagues get paid the most? While the term “professional athlete” often evokes ideas of basketball, football, hockey, and soccer players, leading athletes in individual sports such as golf, horse racing, tennis, track and field, gymnastics, and auto racing can also generate large incomes and lucrative endorsement deals.

There are many high-earning careers off the field, court or rink too, such as working in sports management or as a sports marketer, agent, doctor, broadcaster, and more.

CHALLENGE OF THE DAY:

Today’s challenge: Triple Play Ball Toss Challenge! In this challenge, you will try to score points by throwing balls into buckets, baskets, boxes or whatever you have in your home. You will want as many buckets as you can find as the targets, and at least one ball or round object you can throw into the target.

Line up the buckets, boxes, etc. And label them a specific amount of points (the further away the container, the more points you will want it to be.)

Create a starting point where you will stand and throw the ball from. Determine how many throws you will make if you only have one ball or circular object, or have ready a certain number of balls you will be allowed to throw.

Challenge your family and keep a running score to see who can accumulate the most points! To make it more interesting, try only bouncing the ball instead of throwing into the container, or switching up your throwing hand – only using your left hand or right hand.
