ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

On August 28, 1963, during his famous march on Washington, the civil-rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. proclaims “I have a dream.” Delivered to over 250,000 civil rights supporters from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., the speech was a defining moment of the Civil Rights Movement.

IT'S A CELEBRATION:

Ashura is a holy day for Muslims all over the world, celebrated on the 10th day of Muharram, according to the Islamic calendar. This year, Ashura falls on August 28, and will end the evening of August 29.

For the Sunnis, Ashura is the day Moses fasted to show his gratitude for the freedom of the Israelites. Today is also a holy day of mourning observed primarily by Shi’a Muslims. The Shi’a Muslims see it as the climax of the Remembrance of Muharram and the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali (the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad) at the battle of Karbala. Other Muslim sects spend the day fasting and meditating.

Did you know that in 1979 Saddam Hussein bans the religious observance honoring Ashura commemorations?
