ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

August 31, 1955: William Cobb demonstrates first solar-powered car.

William G. Cobb of the General Motors Corp. (GM) demonstrates his 15-inch-long “Sunmobile,” the world’s first solar-powered automobile, at the General Motors Powerama auto show held in Chicago, Illinois.

IT'S A CELEBRATION:

August 31st is World Distance Learning Day!

Today is a day to embrace the learning that takes place outside of the physical classroom.  This is something that many are facing during COVID.   Whether you are enrolled in a remote learning program that is delivered entirely at a distance, or a hybrid blend of in-classroom and at-home learning, the added flexibility and often more cost-effective option of distance learning is benefiting more students around the world than ever before.

BRAIN TEASER:

Billy’s mother had five children. The first was named Lala, the second was named Lele, the third was named Lili, the fourth was named Lolo. What was the fifth child named?

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT:

Now more than ever, it is important to create a safe, supportive and inclusive environment at school and at home. This program provides opportunities and experiences to practice social emotional development, specifically empathy for others.

To start this week off, Ms. Philecia asks you to create a time capsule full of all your favorite items.

Supplies:

  1. Old shoe box or container of some sort
  2. Writing/coloring utensils
  3. Favorite items (if you don’t want to put the actually items inside just take a picture of it)
  4. Paper
  5. Pictures of yourself, family and friends

Directions:

  1. Decorate the outside of your time capsule. Be sure to include the year somewhere on it as well.
  2. Include all of your items into the time capsule
  3. Now think about special characteristics, strengths or talents you have and identify the person, event or thing that influenced them. Consider objects or items to represent the special characteristic (the gift that person, event or thing gave them). If you don’t have the actual item, try to find an image of it online and print it out or draw it out to add it to your time capsule.
  4. Take a photo of your time capsule and share it with #ClubAtHome on social media
  5. You can hide your time capsule underground or simply keep it as a keep sake to reopen when you’re older.
DAILY CHALLENGE:

ERS

Hello and welcome to this week’s Recreation challenge! This week, Mr. Alex and Mr. Jermaine at the Dr. Ledyard E. Ross Unit are playing ERS with their group. This card game is derived from a British game called “Beggar-My-Neighbor.” ERS is an exciting, competitive game that you can easily play at home! It only requires two or more players and a deck of cards.

Here’s how you play:

  1. Deal out the entire deck as evenly as possible
  2. One person starts by playing a card face-up in the center of everyone
  3. Going clockwise, everyone keeps playing a card
  4. The goal of the game is to get all the cards
  5. You do so by slapping certain combinations of cards: doubles (ex: 7 on top of 7) or sandwiches (6 then 7 then 6)
  6. Also, face cards play a special role: when a jack is played, the next person has 1 chance to play a face card or the person who played the jack gets the cards. Queen is two chances. King is three chances. Ace is four chances.
