ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

June 17, 1897 

James Weldon Johnson was the first African American admitted to the Florida Bar Exam since Reconstruction. 

He was also the first African American in Duval County to seek admission to the state bar. In order to receive entry Johnson underwent a two-hour examination before three attorneys and a judge. He was also a writer/poet and the co-author of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” also known as the Black National Anthem.

We never get tired of the classics so today we are celebrating a favorite by  

Mr. James Weldon Johnson!  

There have been several versions of “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
