ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

May 15, 1942

Legislation creating the Women’s Army Corps becomes law.

On this day in 1942, a bill establishing a women’s corps in the U.S. Army becomes law, creating the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps (WAACs) and granting women official military status.

IT'S A CELEBRATION:

May 15th is National Chocolate Chip Day!

BRAIN TEASER:

1. Monday –

  1. “Finished files are the result of years of scientific study combined with the experience of years.”

How many F’s did you find?

Answer: SIX

Solution:Most peoplesay three. Why? We often dontcorrectly process the word OF for two reasons. First, the letter F usually makes the f sound, like in fox. However, in the word of, it makes a v sound. Second, you have probably read the word “of” so many times in your life that you process it as one unit, overlooking the second letter/ sound.

2. Tuesday

  1.  Of the 100 people at a recent party, 90 spoke Spanish, 80 spoke Italian, and 75 spoke Mandarin. At least how many spoke all three languages?

Answer: 45

EXPLANATION:
10 could not speak Spanish, 20 could not speak Italian, and 25 could not speak Mandarin. So there could have been 10 people who spoke none of those languages.

However, that would maximize the number of people who could speak all three, and the problem asks at least how many speak all three. Therefore, we must assume that these 10, 20, and 25 people are all separate people. Having identified 55 each of whom is missing one language, the remaining 45 speak all three.

3. Wednesday –

  1. Which figure should be placed in the empty triangle?

Answer: 3

SOLUTION:

The top number minus the bottom left-hand number is multiplied by the bottom right-hand number to give the number inside the triangle.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT:

Mindfulness for Teens: Practices

  1. Tech Detox

Devices contribute to our stress in numerous ways: they distract us from our direct experience, the emails and notifications aggravate our worries, and social media contributes to fear of missing out (FOMO) and lots of unhelpful comparisons. Encourage your teen to pay attention to how spending time on his devices makes him feel. Invite him to take frequent breaks (minimum 20 minutes at a time) when there’s NO technology — no phone, no TV, no computer, no iPod.

Disconnecting from technology reconnects you to your experience!

Join in on the Fun by creating a photo collage of different locations from your dream college.

Choosing a college is a serious step in reaching your future career goals. Doing research on your dream school will help you make the decision on whether that school is for you!

Challenge:

  1. The first step is deciding which college or university you would like to attend one day. Take some time to look through some schools that you have heard of and look up some you have not.
  2. Search through the internet and find photos of the university you selected.
  3. Create a collage of different locations on the campus of your dream college.

Photos can include…..

  • Dorm rooms
  • Athletic fields, gymnasiums
  • Dining halls
  • Student Recreation Centers
  • Significant buildings/Statues on Campus
  • Scenery of the Campus

Save your collage and share with friends and family members. It will be a great memory for you to look back on!!
