ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

May 22, 1802

First Lady Martha Washington dies.

President George Washington’s devoted widow and the nation’s first first lady, Martha Dandridge Custis Washington, dies at her Mt. Vernon home on May 22, 1802. She was 70 years old.

IT'S A CELEBRATION:

May 22nd is National Don’t Fry Friday

Each year on the Friday before Memorial Day, National Don’t Fry Day aims to raise awareness of all the risks of overexposure to the sun.  It is important for everyone to remember to use sun protection and sun safety practices.

Unfortunately, skin cancer is increasing in the United States, and the American Cancer Society estimates that one American dies every hour from skin cancer.  The risk for ultraviolet (UV) damage to the skin increases as we spend more time enjoying the outdoors now that warmer weather is upon us. We need to take precautions when we are outside in the sun.  Using a good sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, wearing sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat are a few ways to get started with sun safety.

Skin cancer is curable if it is found early.  Be aware of changes on your skin with growths and in moles.  See your doctor if you have any concerns.  Be safe!

BRAIN TEASER:

We hurt without moving. We poison without touching. We bear the truth and the lies. We are not to be judged by our size. What are we?

Thursday May 21 Answer: Stop imagining it

There is something to be said about the destructiveness of self-fulfilling prophecies that people regularly impose upon themselves. When every hint of trouble is immediately viewed as a disaster and any attempt at remedying a situation is brushed aside with “What’s the point? It will never work,” then what chance do we stand when things really go bad? It is important not to give up before the battle has even begun, and to avoid taking yourself to that dark and lonely place all the time. A little positivity and determination will go a long way.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT:

Social Wellness for Teens: Practices

Maintaining a healthy social life is a part of keeping up with your mental health, especially during this pandemic. There are a few simple steps to take to ensure that you have a healthy social life:

5. Quality over Quantity.

  1. Never measure your social wellness by the amount of friends you have, but by the quality of your friendships.
  2. Always evaluate your friendships to make sure you are getting and giving enough love, trust and support.
  3. Make sure your friends are there for you and not just what you can do for them.
  4. Take a moment every now and then to make sure that you and your friends are being a positive influence on each other’s lives.

DAILY CHALLENGE:

White-Painted Texture Sculpture

This is a simple yet fun style of art! All you have to do is find random items in your home and glue them to a canvas, piece of cardboard, sheet of paper, or anything you want. Then, paint it all white! There is no “correct” method for this style of art. Mr. Alex chose to create small patterns as well as place items randomly on the canvas. Anything goes, so get creative and do not worry if you miss a spot! (Like he did  see if you can find it.) Once you’re done, we recommend running your hand over your sculpture once it is dried. Have FUN!
